There is a tradition in the US when children wear dangerous carnival costumes on Halloween night and come to the neighboring houses with a basket to ask for mercy, in this case it is sweets. That night every house is full of candies or cookies so no child is left without a gift. A quarter of the sweets are sold annually on Halloween, in the US.
The main attribute of Halloween is a pumpkin, with frightened eyes and mouth. Pumpkins of different sizes and shapes are used for decoration on this day, houses, yards, shops are lit. Desserts, cookies, chocolates, cakes and even breads are created on the theme of Halloween. The main direction of the decor are ghosts, witches, mummies and other dangerous characters.
There are two versions about the origination of Halloween. The first is relating to Celtic holiday of harvest in late October, during which people lit bonfires, wore dangerous costumes to scare evil spirits and ghosts. Scholars believe that it is these pagan traditions that are the source of today’s Halloween carnival activity.
The second version is related to the Christian holiday of All Saints in Europe, which was celebrated on the first of November, hence the name All Hallows’ Eve. Halloween originated by a combination of celebrations with almost identical content, which Irish and Scottish immigrants brought to the North American continent since the 19th century. It has developed into what it is today in the United States and has become one of the favorite holidays for children and adults.
