Eggnog -milk punch

Eggnog is a drink made with milk, sugar, cream and egg yolk. Alcohol (rum, bourbon, brandy or whiskey) is often added, if desired. This filling, creamy drink can be served both as a   dessert and a cocktail. The spices (cinnamon and nutmeg) added to it make eggnog a real festival drink. Eggnog has been a favorite holiday drink of Americans since the 18th century. It is known that George Washington, the US President used to feast visitors with Eggnog. Before its spread across America, in Britain only aristocrats and wealthy British people can afford this cocktail made on milk, cream and egg base.  


For the preparation of eggnog you will need:

  • 500 ml milk
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon (ground)
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • Vanilla bean paste, if desired
  • 5 egg yolks
  • ½ cup of sugar
  • 250 ml high-percentage cream
  • 100-200 ml alcohol, black rum or whiskey


Put milk, cinnamon, grated nutmeg and vanilla (if used) in a saucepan on the fire. Bring to a boil.

At the same time, beat the egg yolks and sugar with a hand whisk. The mass should become lighter in color. Pour the boiled milk into the egg and sugar mass, mix well and return to the saucepan. Stir continuously with a hand whisk over low heat. Bring the mass to a boil, but do not boil. Pour into a clean bowl and add cream, stir well and finally add alcohol.

For serving, divide between the cups and sprinkle with cinnamon. You can also add whipped cream. Drink well chilled.

Eggnog is kept in fridge for up to 4 days, if put in a hermetically sealed container.
